Hello,

i am new to res workspace. I have downloaded the free version and i want to evaluate the possibilities in our environment.
We are publishing remoteapps from a windows 2008r2 terminalserver farm.
I have read some kb articles about using workpace manager with remoteapps but i have some problems.
Maybe somebody can help me.
How can i use workspace manager with remoteapps? When i use the "start program when user login" (gpo or rdp settings on server) option and add there the pfwsmgr.exe it is not starting. When i start a full desktop it is working. I think this programs will not start with a remote app.
Then i have tried to "publish" a bat which is starting the pfwsmgr.exe and after that the applikation.
This works, but everytime when user starts remote app, an explorer windows is also stated.
Is there another way to use res workspace with remoteapp?
I want to use res workspace in the first implementation step to configure printers, drive map and soon for our user.

Thank you

Hi Marc,

Welcome to the forums!

The RemoteApp integration is only available in the paid versions of Workspace Manager, i.e. Silver Edition and above.

Having said that, theoretically there is nothing stopping you manually configuring an application to start. The way the WM does this for published applications is by launching "%RESPFDIR%\PWRGATE.EXE <ApplicationID>" (or "PWRGATE.EXE <ApplicationGUID>"). Change the RemoteApp target and give it a test. I've not tried this with the Express edition so RES may stop this in some way.

Let us know how you get on,
Iain

Hello.

Thanks for your reply.

Maybe i have some difficults to understand the res workspace.

I want to achieve the following:
When a user starts a remoteapp, the user should get printers and drive mappings which are configured in res workspace manager
Also on reconnect to exisitng session.
We want to create rules for assigned printers based on clientname.
At the Moment we are using group policy preferences for this.
But i hoped, when i use res workspace manager for fat clients, i can also use my "rules" with remoteaps.
So i have tried to use the way described in first post.

I do not need a way to deploy remoteapps to user.
Do i really need silver edition for this scenario?
Regards

To get RES WM to configure anything you need to ensure that it's started before the application. By replacing the RemoteApp target with %RESPFDIR%\PWRGATE.EXE you will ensure that RES WM starts, configures the user's session and then launches the required application. For example, if you are trying to manage NOTEPAD.EXE then you need to a) define the application in RES WM (note the application ID that points to NOTEPAD.EXE), b) create the RemoteApp with a target of %RESPFDIR%PWRGATE.EXE AppID (ID as a parameter) and finally c) publish it on all the required servers.

You'll know when you get it right as you will see the RES WM splash screen when launching a RemoteApp. The integration in RES WM with RemoteApp will configure the above for you automagically and publish the app to the required servers.

It's my understanding that the Express editions will only configure the users' sessions on log on. Therefore, you may find that the Refresh printers etc. on reconnect may only work with the Bronze edition and above?

Thanks, Iain
