Hello there,
I am setting up an enviroment for two companies working on the same Citrix Farm. I would like to use the %deskpic% variable for changing background appearance.
The problem is that i cannot figure out how it works. I have 2 images and multiple ou's to differentiate the 2 organisations. But how does a setup with 2 background images work?
Regards,
Edwin

Replying in my vacation.. so I cannot verify all of it..
If I'm right, you can setup an environment variable. Call it DeskPic. Place the path and filename in it (example c:\windows\logo1.bmp) and set the variable to an user, usergroup or powerzone.
Make another envirenment variable. Give it the same name and put in the path en filname for the other logo. Place it on an user, usergroup or powerzone.
Than go to the dekstop settings within PF console and check the box that you want to use the %deskpic% variable.
That should be all.

There is a sligtly better way. I am also writing from memory as I've just spun down my VM's
1) Use the RES console to upload the 2 bitmaps to the RES database. Do this under desktop mgmt | ...uhm, something desktop... | appearance. Use the browse button. What will happen is that PowerFuse will upload the bitmaps to the pf db and automagically distribute them to the agents, so you don't have to worry about the paths nor getting the bitmaps out there.
note: even though you can upload all sorts of jpg, png etc, it really works best if you convert the desired wallpapers to .BMP using, say MSpaint or similar before uploading them.
Let's say you've uploaded two bitmaps. We call them pic1.bmp and pic2.bmp
2) go to config mgmt | powerlaunch | environment variables
3) create a new variable, the name must be deskpic (no percentages are neccessary)
4) set the value to pic1.bmp (and put in something in the description field that would make sense to yourself 6 months down the road. You'll thank yourself for it later)
5) go to the access control tab of the environment variable and set the identity and/or location of who shall use pic1.bmp as wallpaper. Click ok
6) repeat steps 2-5 where you instead this time use the value pic2.bmp. Note the variable name deskpic must be used again.
If any user is overlapping the access control, which you have specified for the two variables, then the one that counts is the last one which is applied. You can see the order in the far right columb of the list of environment variables. The highest number gets applied last.
Hopes this helps

HOWTO: Configure user-specified wallpaper.
Solution 1.1 - Use %deskpic% in combination with a user-defined wallpaper in 7.03SR2 and earlier
For RES PowerFuse 703d SR2 and earlier:
1) Select the check box "Use %deskpic% variable set by PowerLaunch to determine image filename" (Real Enterprise Manager > Desktop Management > Appearance > Desktop).
2) Create a variable for users that need a user-defined wallpaper: %deskpic% = %username%.bmp
3) Create a folder by using Home Directory Maintenance (e.g. %homedrive%\desktop\background).
4) Create an external task that executes a script that copies %username%.bmp from homedrive%\desktop\background to the RES PowerFuse share (\\servername\powerfuse$\icon).
The user only needs to save his wallpaper (named username.bmp) in the %homedrive%\desktop\background folder (replace "username" with the login name of the user).
Solution 1.2 - Use %deskpic% in combination with a pre-defined wallpaper in RES PowerFuse 801 and later
1) Add the desired bitmap to RES PowerFuse by clicking the "Image..." button in Desktop Management > Appearance > Desktop.
2) Select the check box "Use %deskpic% variable set by PowerLaunch to determine image filename" (RES PowerFuse Management Console > Desktop Management > Appearance > Desktop).
3) Configure the environment variable %deskpic% in PowerLaunch and add the name of the file selected in step 1 as the value. In this way a specific bitmap file can be assigned based on user, PowerZone etc. Do not enter the full path to the file in the value, because this path will be invalid on other computers.
Solution 1.3 - Use PowerPanel to select a background picture in 8.01 and later
From RES PowerFuse version 8 onwards, the user can select his wallpaper on the "Background" tab in PowerPanel. The picture file should be located in a folder which is accessible for the user, for example his Homedrive. The default location for the picture file is %Homedrive%\PwrMenu, but the user can scroll to other folders in the picture selection pane.
In thePowerFuse Management Console, the RES PowerFuse Environment lockdown rule: "Hide Change Desktop picture
in PowerPanel" should be disabled.
