Posted on August 29th, 2010 No comments
Last week the RES Nordic survey on virtualizaton/Win7 migraton concluded with some interesting results and a winner of the iPad was drawn. Congratulations to Mr. Henrik Dahl from Arrive in Norway. The survey of close to 1.000 IT professionals in the Nordics, conducted byRES Software, shows that eight out of ten businesses have decided to roll out Windows 7, and almost half will roll out virtual workspaces by the end of the year. Migrating user profiles is considered the biggest challenge. The most interesting finding in the survey was that only 4 out of 10 migration projects are completed within time and budget limits. The survey consists of 20 simple multichoice questions and is completely anonymous. However you may choose to enter your details to win a brand spankin’ new iPad. Again, the survey is only conducted in the Nordic RES markets (Denmark, Norway and Sweden), which is why the surveys are not in english.

Setting up a PowerFuse connection via DHCP options
Posted on July 3rd, 2010 2 comments
Here’s a quite useful feature which was introduced with PowerFuse 2010. At some customer sites, it was not possible/allowed to create DNS alias’s for the PowerFuse datastore. Imagine you’ve got multiple sites across the planet and you want to ensure that travelling workers alwas hit the local PowerFuse datastore. The way you can ensure this, is by using DHCP options. This generic approach can be supported by most infrastructure components, that offers a DHCP service with Options support. The article at hand will take you through the steps necessary to configure it correctly. Read the rest of this entry »

PowerFuse 2010 SR1 Released!
Posted on June 7th, 2010 2 commentsFrom the New Hotness dept. Today, June 7th 2010, RES Software released the long awaited Service Release 1 for PowerFuse 2010. Besides +70 fixes and cool enhancements, there are loads of goodies in this release. Below you will find a breakdown of the new stuff and a link to download the releasenotes. As always the Service Release package is available at the RES Portal for existing SA customers.
- Support for Citrix Xenapp 6 application publishing (yay!)
- Support for MS SQLserver 2008 R2
- Continous background folder syncronization (running at intervals from 1 min to 8 hours)
- Ability to specify /SAMPLEPATH on the Desktop Sampler, thereby enabeling deployment as a custom ressource.
- Option to not launch instant passthrough session if an application is locally available
- Outlook now configured per default to not check default client, to avoid being hassled by the fact that pwrgate.exe handles the lauch
- Built-in option to skip first-time shell init. You may remember this article from a while back on how to do this manually. PowerFuse now has the capability to configure this behavior from within the console!
- And much more!
The unattended installer can be downloaded here and the manual installer here (both require login) Notice the name of the executable has changed. We no longer refer to the quarterly updates as ‘Power Packs’ anymore. They are referred to as Service Packs from now on.
The release notes for 2010 SR1 can be downloaded right here:

PowerFuse AdminGuide released!
Posted on May 23rd, 2010 No commentsMay 20th, the RES PowerFuse Administrative guide was released. This massive 312 page document has been in the works for quite a few months. It contains alot of good, solid technical information about how to deploy and configure all the components of RES PowerFuse, including the Desktop Sampler, the Workspace Extender, all sorts of interesting commandlines, registry settings etc.
Here are some of the sections I would like to highlight from the guide:
- Pages 109-128: Here you have a complete reference to all the .ini settings in the pwrmenu.ini file in the users homedirectory.
- Pages 185-195: All the secret sauce on Zero Profile Technology, that is how to use it. (sorry A.S., you’ll have to figure out to do ZPT on your own :-)
- Pages 200-205: Describes the exact order in which things happen inside PowerFuse during login, session refresh and logout. This is valuable information, folks!
- Pages 285-297: Yes! Finaly a complete and official guide to the PowerFuse registry settings. As my old article on RESGuru.com hasn’t been updated for quite a while time, this is definatly a must-read!
The Admin Guide can be downloaded from the RES Software portal using this link. Note that a login is NOT required for this file. For a complete overview of free downloads, visit the download treeview here. This is a bookmark worth saving. All free downloads are marked with this icon:
All downloads requiring login with your SA portal account are marked with a padlock icon like this one
.To download other technical documents in the treeview, you’ll want to navigate to Downloads Tree | RES PowerFuse | Technical documentation.
Happy reading!
