The link can be used without having a solution assurance account, meaning you will finally have access to all RES Software related documentation for free! Sander, over at RES HQ, was so kind to inform us. Also, these documents are being indexed by Google as of now, so in the future you should be able to find a lot more RES PowerFuse, -Wisdom and other product related information on the world wide web.

This whitepaper was written by Brian Madden for RES Software. It describes on a high-level why it’s important to take virtualization of the User Workspace into consideration.

Everyone wants to reduce the costs associated with supporting desktop users, and one of the most promising ways to do that is with desktop virtualization. The costsavings of desktop virtualization are usually realized via lower management costs associated with managing a single “master” installation of Windows that all users share instead of managing a unique installation for each user. While this makes sense for IT, it poses unique challenges for users who are accustomed to having their own unique desktops.

In this paper, independent industry expert Brian Madden will look at the user workspace challenges faced when virtualizing desktops, and how users can continue to get a personalized workspace even when sharing a “master” virtual desktop image.

Click here to download the whitepaper

May 4th, at 21:00 GMT, it is officially announced that the people behind the RES Software User Group and the RESguru.com website are joining forces to provide even better content and information to the entire RES community.

Max Ranzau, aka the RESguru; “This is an exiting opportunity to contribute content to this cause. Until now, due to the fact that I’m at RES Software, I was constrained to write under pseudonym for legal reasons. As RES Usergroup is an seperate legal entity, I am now allowed to write under my own name as a regular community member. It will be a pleasure to continue serving the community with new and interesting material.”

Yuri Haak, co-founder of RESug.com: “This is indeed a match made in heaven as the newly started community provides an officially vendor sanctioned place for all RES community members; administrators, integrators, distributors and RES employees alike to share ideas and all sorts of things. Merging with Max’s RESguru.com provides a massive influx of material which will be of great value to the community.”

So, what’s going to happen at RESguru.com? This message has been posted on both sites. In a short while, the RESguru.com domain will be pointed towards RESug.com to seal the deal. All previous content from RESguru.com will be still available in it’s current form. The forums at RESguru.com will however be replaced with the forum at RESug. We all believe that this marriage of effort will bring the best of both worlds to the RES community.

The [pwruser.ini] file contains user preferences and is usually stored in the [pwrmenu] subfolder of the user’s homedirectory. Just to be clear on the matter, the file really has nothing to do with the User Preferences you can configure in PowerFuse 2008. It merely holds some user based configuration regarding items like desktop icons, quicklaunch items, screensaver configuration and run-once history. This article will cover most of the contents of the [pwruser.ini] file.

A thing to keep in mind would be the situation where you could be working in an environment where users from a single Active Directory environment would login to multiple PowerFuse sites within that environment. In this case the [pwruser.ini] file from site [X] would be automatically overwritten by the [pwruser.ini] file from site [Y] and vice versa. This is beacuse by default PowerFuse will use the location [homedriveletter:]\pwrmenu\pwruser.ini]] for storing user preferences.

This situation can be easily prevented by editing the [pwrmenu.ini] file on the agent on which PowerFuse is installed. By changing the contents of the file we can now alter the location that particular PowerFuse agent will look for the [pwruser.ini] file.

To achieve this, simply change the [settings= \Pwrmenu ] section in the [pwrmenu.ini] to whatever you want. PowerFuse will now look for the [pwruser.ini] file in the location you specify. If the folder does not already exist in the user’s homedirectory, a hidden folder is automatically created. By configuring the correct options in Home Directory Maintenance you can provide preconfigured [pwruser.ini] files for any environment you desire. RES Software’s solution assurance (SA) customers who have access to the knowledgebase can find more information concerning this subject in Q200863.
